As we age, the body tends to produce fewer lactase enzymes required to break down lactose, the sugar in milk. The deficit of lactase means that lactose isn’t appropriately digested, leading to bloating, gas, and even diarrhoea. However, not every bloke suffers from the same level of lactase deficiency, meaning that your mate might have that cheese sandwich with no repercussions, while it could upset your guts for the rest of the day.

Dairy’s importance isn’t a question. It’s packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins, enough to dub it a superfood. But we’re not left without alternatives if dairy decides to become a foe rather than a friend to our digestive systems. There’s a wide variety of plant-based dairy alternatives available today— the likes of almond milk, coconut yoghurt, or oat-based ice cream, not to mention the plethora of lactose-free dairy products available.

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to nutrition, especially when considering our age and individual bodies. It’s important to evaluate your diet and understand what works for you and what just gives you the grumbles. Is your post-meal discomfort due to lactose?
