Fuel Your Fitness
Are you pushing into your forties and starting to feel like your best days are behind you when it comes to your health and fitness? Well, guess what, that is a complete myth! In fact, it’s never too late to press the reset button on your health-goals. According to recent findings, you don’t necessarily need to wave goodbye to the foods you love either. Here’s what happened when I started experimenting with my diet amid my daily workout sessions.
Energy Boosters Not So Good?
Best of the athletes swear by simple sugars and starches to fuel their performances. Can you do the same? You might have seen them digging into foods like Calippos and Greggs Steak Bakes to get that burst of energy. These foods offer quick energy because they are high on the glycemic index. Their sugars can be absorbed instantly, sending spikes of energy to your body. But the downside to this ready-to-go energy is the risk of weight gain and type-2 diabetes.
Moderation Is Key
And if you’re a man over 40, then you might want to reconsider these high glycemic foods. The problem with these energy-rich foods is that over-consumption can be easy, and controlling portions, hard. Does this mean you’ll need to say farewell to these treats? Not necessarily.
The trick here is timing and balance. These ‘boosters’ can still be impactful when consumed the right way and at the right time. For instance, consuming them just before a high-intensity workout can be beneficial. When you’re working out, your body needs urgent energy, and these quick fixes come in handy.
Swap For Nutrient-Dense Alternatives
If you’re like me, though, you’ll want to find more wholesome alternatives that not only supply energy but also pack a nutrient punch. These include bananas, wholegrain foods, and eggs. The key here is balance.
Bananas, rich in carbs, are a great pre-workout snack. Whole grains provide sustained energy due to their complex carb content and high fibre. Whereas, eggs due to their protein content help in muscle recovery post-workouts.
Stay Hydrated, But Be Mindful
Hydration is another key consideration for anyone thinking about #NutritionOver40. You need to balance your intake of water with the right foods for optimal performance. But beware of sugary energy drinks. While they seem like a convenient way to stay hydrated, in excess, they can contribute to obesity.
No One-Size-Fits-All
The story doesn’t stop here. Nutrition isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. And that’s why I believe in personalised advice tailored to your body type, health statistics, and fitness goals. Remember, age is just a number. What counts more is the attitude and determination to stay fit and healthy.
Don’t let society’s ‘ageist’ perception hold you back from achieving your health goals. You are unstoppable, my friend! But remember, this journey is individual, and often, it helps to take an expert’s advice on these matters. Interested?
