Fight, flight and FREEZE
Pretty much everyone has heard of your innate responses of Fight or Flight, but what a lot of people don't realise is there is actually a 3rd response, FREEZE.
Think of a rabbit caught in the headlights of an approaching car. It certainly isn't thinking of fighting the enormous threat, yet for some reason it's unable to run either. This is the freeze response. "Do nothing, maybe the threat will go away!"
The problem we often have in times of stress is that the only response we can give is this third one, freeze.
Think of a time when you were stressed, your mind goes gone blank, you want to run away but you know you'll look silly, or you want to punch someone in the face but you are aware enough to show restraint. So you just stand there. Often holding your breath. Which in turn makes you more anxious.
BREATHE!! Stop holding your breath, take a deep breath, maybe even two, then take action. Maybe place your hands on your stomach to make sure there is movement there as you breath.
